Cohort 17’s thrilling graduation performance was the culmination of a 12 week journey embarked upon by these young people, many of whom had never danced before. They rose to the many challenges presented to them but above all did this with care, kindness and a willingness to learn.
The evening opened with Behind the Light which was choreographed by our dance artists Hannah Martin-Reilly and Emma Winston.
The second piece, In Conversation, was the result of our collaborative choreography process which was led by Natalie Watson, who was our current trainee dance artist. Natalie worked with the dancers to create and develop their own choreography.
Our finale piece was Now Here – a powerful and unique piece of choreography created by guest choreographer Andrea Buckley and Hannah Ballard. Andrea is a dancer and works with Siobhan Davies Dance but she is also a maker and teacher and she uses an extensive range of improvisation and skills in her work. For our dancers this was a very different experience with much of the piece being made on them and used improvisation rather than taught movement. As part of this process we were also delighted to welcome Jamie McCarthy who created the music for the piece and performed live on stage.
We said a fond farewell to both Josh and Saffron who had both been with us for a year at the Academy. Josh joined us on cohort 14 in April 2016 and Saffron on cohort 16 in September 2016. They have both gone on to become role models and members of our performance company. We are delighted that they are both going on to study dance at Chichester College in September 2017 and wish them all the best for their future journey in dance.
